Local Citation Building is part of our Internet Marketing Service work. It is the directory and data side of local search: making sure every place that mentions your business tells the same, correct story.
What is a local citation?
A local citation is any online mention of your business name, address and phone number, often called NAP. Citations appear in directories, map apps, industry sites, chamber listings and social profiles.
- Structured citations are listings with set fields, such as a directory profile or Bing Places
- Unstructured citations are mentions in articles, event pages or local blogs
- Data sources feed business details into other platforms, so one wrong record can spread
Why do consistent citations matter?
Consistent citations help search engines and AI tools trust that your business details are real and current. Google lists prominence as one of its local ranking factors, and information about a business from across the web is part of how it judges that.
Conflicting details cause practical problems too. A customer who finds your old suite number or a disconnected phone line on a directory may give up. AI assistants that read the web may repeat outdated details, and ChatGPT search draws partly on Bing results, which makes Bing Places worth claiming.
What is included in Local Citation Building?
- A NAP audit to find every version of your business details online
- One master record of your official name, address, phone, hours and website
- Duplicate listing cleanup and merge requests
- Corrections on listings with old addresses, numbers or names
- Bing Places and Apple Business Connect listings
- Relevant industry directories for your trade or profession
- Local business and community directories in your area
- A tracking sheet of every listing, login owner and status
Cleanup often matters more than volume. A few dozen accurate, relevant listings usually beat hundreds of low-quality directory submissions, and some directories can be hard or slow to correct.
When does a business need citation cleanup?
The most common trigger is a change. Each of these leaves old details spread across the web.
| Situation | What usually goes wrong |
|---|---|
| You moved, even to a new unit | Old address and suite number stay live on many listings |
| You changed phone numbers | Calls go to a dead line or a previous owner |
| You rebranded | Old and new names look like two different businesses |
| A past provider created listings | You don’t have logins, and some details are wrong |
| You use a call tracking number | Directories show a number that doesn’t match your main listing |

Citation building for Surrey, the Lower Mainland and Canadian businesses
Surrey addresses are a common source of mismatches. Businesses may list their community name, such as Newton, Cloverdale or South Surrey, on one site and “Surrey” on another. Unit numbers written as “Unit 205”, “#205” or “205-” create more variations, and we standardise them to match your Google Business Profile.
Industry matters as well. Trades, clinics, realtors and trucking companies each have their own relevant directories. We serve businesses across the Lower Mainland, from Surrey to Richmond and Maple Ridge, and work remotely with businesses across Canada.
How does citation work fit with your other local search work?
Citations are one input among several. Your profile itself is maintained through Google Business Profile Management, map ranking strategy sits in Google Maps SEO, and the wider plan lives in Local SEO.
Earning mentions and links from respected local sites is closer to Off-Page SEO & Link Building. Your website’s own NAP can also be marked up for machines through Structured Data & Schema Markup. Start with a free analysis on our contact page.
Frequently asked questions
How many citations does my business need?
There’s no magic number. What matters is that the main platforms and the directories relevant to your industry and area list you correctly. A smaller set of accurate, relevant listings is more useful than a large number of low-quality ones. We focus first on the platforms customers and AI tools actually use.
Do citations still help local SEO?
Yes, but as one signal among many. Consistent citations support Google’s view of your business’s prominence and help customers and AI tools find correct details. They won’t make up for a weak profile, few reviews or a poor website, so we treat them as part of a wider plan.
How long does citation cleanup take?
It depends on how many listings exist, how many have errors and how each directory handles changes. Some updates go live quickly, while others need verification or can take a long time to process. We track each listing’s status and report what’s complete and what’s pending.
What do you need from me to start?
Your official business name, address, main phone number, website, hours and any old addresses, numbers or names you’ve used. Access to email inboxes used for past listings also helps, since many directories send verification codes there. If a past provider created listings, let us know who it was so we can trace those accounts.
Will I own the listings you create?
Yes. Listings should be tied to your business email wherever possible so you keep control. We give you a full record of each listing and its login details when the work is done. If any listings were created under someone else’s email, we help move them to an address you control.
How much does Local Citation Building cost?
Cost depends on how many listings need cleanup, how many duplicates exist and how many new listings are relevant to your industry. A business that recently moved usually needs more cleanup than a new one. Request a free analysis and we will quote from what we find.
