Structured Data & Schema Markup is part of our Internet Marketing Service work. It sits underneath your visible content, labelling facts in a format machines can read without guessing.

What is structured data and schema markup?

Structured data is code that describes the content of a page in a standard format. Schema markup uses the shared vocabulary at schema.org, which Google, Bing and other platforms support.

Google recommends the JSON-LD format, a script block that sits in the page without changing what visitors see. A human reads “Open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.” while the markup states the same hours as labelled data a search engine can parse.

Which schema types do we implement?

We choose types based on what your pages actually contain. Common ones for local businesses and stores include the following.

Schema typeWhere it goesWhat it describes
LocalBusiness (or a subtype such as Dentist or Plumber)Home or contact pageName, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates, service area, social profiles
OrganizationHome or about pageBrand name, logo, website and official profiles
ServiceService pagesThe service, who provides it and the area served
Product and OfferProduct pagesPrice in CAD, availability, brand and genuine reviews
BreadcrumbListMost pagesWhere the page sits in your site structure
ArticleBlog postsHeadline, author and publish date
FAQPagePages with visible FAQsQuestions and answers shown on the page

Linking these together with consistent identifiers helps machines see one connected business entity rather than separate, unrelated facts.

What can schema markup do, and what can’t it do?

Structured data makes your pages eligible for some rich results and makes your information clearer to machines. It does not guarantee a rich result or a ranking change.

  • Product markup can support price, availability and review details in Google results for stores, which ties into our Ecommerce SEO work
  • Breadcrumb markup can show your site path in place of a long URL
  • FAQ rich results are now limited by Google to a small set of authoritative government and health sites, but FAQPage markup still describes your Q&A clearly
  • Review stars are not shown for reviews a business publishes about itself on its own site

Markup must match what visitors can see on the page. Marking up hidden content, fake reviews or prices that aren’t shown breaks Google’s structured data guidelines and can lead to a manual action.

Schema markup for Surrey, the Lower Mainland and Canadian websites

Local details are where markup most often goes wrong. A Fleetwood clinic’s schema might list an old suite number, or a South Surrey contractor might mark up a single address when they serve Surrey, White Rock and Langley. We set address, geo coordinates and areaServed to match how your business really operates.

We meet Lower Mainland clients at our Hyland Square office on 152 Street and handle schema projects remotely for websites anywhere in Canada. Request a free analysis on our contact page and we’ll review your current markup.

Frequently asked questions

Will schema markup improve my Google rankings?

Not directly or on its own. Structured data helps Google understand your pages and can make them eligible for some rich results, but it is not a ranking guarantee. Its value comes from clearer information, which supports search features and AI answers alongside good content.

What schema does a local business need?

Most local businesses start with LocalBusiness or a more specific subtype on the home or contact page, Organization details, Service markup on service pages and BreadcrumbList across the site. Online stores add Product and Offer markup. The right set depends on what your pages actually show.

My website plugin already adds schema. Is that enough?

Sometimes, but plugins often add generic or duplicate markup, use the wrong business type or miss service and area details. We audit what’s already there, keep what’s accurate and replace or extend the rest so there’s one clean, consistent set. We also make sure plugin settings don’t add the same markup twice.

Can I add review stars to my own website?

Google does not show review star rich results for reviews a business collects and displays about itself through LocalBusiness or Organization markup. Product pages can show genuine customer product reviews. Your Google reviews still appear on your Google Business Profile. We’ll explain which review markup your site can use.

How do you test structured data?

We use Google’s Rich Results Test to check eligibility for supported features and the Schema Markup Validator to check general schema.org syntax. After launch, Google Search Console enhancement reports show errors and warnings across the site. We recheck markup after site redesigns, theme updates or plugin changes, since these often overwrite it.

How much does schema markup cost?

Cost depends on how many page templates you have, your platform, whether existing markup needs cleanup and whether products or multiple locations are involved. Request a free analysis and we’ll explain the scope and quote from there. Ask us about agreement terms when we talk.
