Website Speed & Core Web Vitals Optimization is part of our Internet Marketing Service work. It focuses on how fast and stable your pages feel to real visitors, especially on phones.

What are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to describe real-world page experience. Google publishes a “good” threshold for each one in its Core Web Vitals guidance.

MetricWhat it measuresGood threshold
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)How quickly the main content, often a hero image or heading, appears2.5 seconds or less
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)How quickly the page responds after a tap, click or key press200 milliseconds or less
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)How much the layout jumps around while loading0.1 or less

INP replaced First Input Delay (FID) as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. It looks at responsiveness across the whole visit, not just the first interaction, so sites that passed before can fail now.

What is the difference between lab data and field data?

Field data comes from real Chrome users visiting your site, while lab data is a simulated test run on demand. Google’s Core Web Vitals assessment uses field data, so that is what we aim to improve.

  • Field data appears in PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console, based on the Chrome User Experience Report
  • Lab data comes from Lighthouse and is useful for diagnosing causes and testing fixes
  • Low-traffic sites may not have enough real-user data for field results, so we rely more on lab tests and careful monitoring

A perfect Lighthouse score is not the goal. A page can score well in a lab test and still feel slow to visitors on older phones or mobile networks, which is why we check both.

What slows business websites down?

Most slow sites share a few causes. We find which ones apply to yours before changing anything.

ProblemMetric it hurtsTypical fix
Large hero images and slidersLCPModern formats such as WebP or AVIF, correct sizing, preloading the main image

How does our speed optimisation process work?

  1. 1

    Free analysis

We check your key pages in PageSpeed Insights and Search Console and explain what we see.

  2. 2

    Diagnose

We trace each failing metric to its cause using Lighthouse and Chrome DevTools, template by template.

  3. 3

    Prioritise

We rank fixes by impact and risk, starting with the templates that get the most traffic.

  4. 4

    Fix and test

We make changes on a staging copy where possible, then check that forms, tracking and checkout still work.

  5. 5

    Monitor

We watch field data in Search Console, which updates over a rolling 28-day window, and report the trend.

Speed is one part of Technical SEO, which also covers crawling and indexing. When a site’s theme is too heavy to fix, a rebuild through Website Design & Development may make more sense, and we’ll tell you honestly.

Why does website speed matter for leads and sales?

Page experience is one of many signals in Google Search, but a fast site matters most to the people using it. A visitor who taps an ad or a map listing and waits on a blank screen may leave before they ever see your phone number or form.

That’s why speed work pairs well with Conversion Rate Optimization and Landing Page Design. Faster pages give every visitor from search, ads and social a better chance to call, book or buy.

Speed optimisation for Surrey, Lower Mainland and Canadian websites

Most local searches happen on phones, often on the move: someone looking up a plumber from a job site in Cloverdale, or checking a restaurant menu while on the SkyTrain to King George Station. Mobile performance is where we focus first.

We work with Surrey and Lower Mainland businesses in person from our office on 152 Street, and fix sites remotely for clients across Canada. Request a free analysis on our contact page to see how your pages perform.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Core Web Vitals score?

Google’s good thresholds are Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less. Google assesses these at the 75th percentile of real visits, so most visitors need a good experience, not just some.

Will a faster website rank higher on Google?

Speed alone won’t lift a page above more relevant results. Page experience is one of many signals, and content relevance matters more. The clearer benefit is to visitors: faster, more stable pages make it easier for people to stay, call or buy.

How long until Search Console shows improvement?

Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report uses field data collected over a rolling 28-day period, so changes appear gradually after fixes go live. Low-traffic pages may not have enough data to show results at all. We monitor lab tests in the meantime.

Can you speed up a WordPress or Shopify site?

Usually, yes. On WordPress we often trim plugins, add caching and optimise images and scripts. Hosted platforms like Shopify limit server changes, so we focus on theme code, apps, images and third-party scripts. We explain what your platform allows before starting.

Will speed changes break my website?

Some optimisations, like delaying scripts, can affect forms, tracking or checkout if done carelessly. We test on a staging copy where possible, check key features after each change and keep a record so anything can be rolled back. You stay in control of when changes go live.

How much does Core Web Vitals optimisation cost?

It depends on your platform, the number of page templates, how many plugins and third-party scripts are involved and whether hosting needs to change. Request a free analysis and we’ll explain the main issues and quote from there. Ask us about agreement terms when we talk.
