SEO or Google Ads First? How to Decide

Should you start with SEO or Google Ads?

For most local businesses in Metro Vancouver, start with Google Ads if you need enquiries moving now, and start with local SEO if your Google Business Profile and website are already weak foundations. Ads buy visibility while you pay. SEO builds visibility you keep. The right first step depends on which gap is costing you more.

We’ve been doing this from Surrey for ten years, and the calls we get usually describe the symptom rather than the channel. “Our Google listing isn’t showing up when people search.” “We’re getting no calls from our website.” “Our competitor shows up above us on Google Maps.” “We’re spending on ads and don’t know what’s working.” Each of those points to a different first move.

Starting with Google Ads

Google Ads is paid placement. You bid on search terms, and your ad can appear when someone searches them. Nothing has to be earned over time — the moment a campaign is approved and funded, it can start showing. That makes it the right first channel when timing matters more than cost per enquiry.

Go here first if:

  • You have a seasonal deadline. Black Friday and the holiday season are the heaviest stretch of the year for most of our e-commerce clients, and organic work started in November is not what carries a November sale.
  • You’re launching something new — a location, a product line, a service you’ve never sold before — and you don’t yet know what people actually search for to find it.
  • Your website converts reasonably well but simply isn’t being seen for the terms that matter.
  • You need data. Ads tell you which search phrases produce enquiries and which ones waste money. That’s useful input for SEO later.

The catch is that it stops when the budget stops. There’s no residual. And “we’re spending on ads and don’t know what’s working” is one of the most common things we hear, usually because campaigns were set up broadly and never pruned. Managed campaigns mean negative keywords, match type control, landing page alignment and regular reporting so you can see what the spend is doing rather than guessing.

Starting with local SEO

Local SEO is the work that makes you findable in unpaid results and on Google Maps: your Google Business Profile, your citations — your business name, address and phone number listed consistently across directories — your site structure, and the pages that answer what people in your area are searching for.

Go here first if:

  • Your Google Business Profile is thin, miscategorised, or missing service areas. For a Surrey trades business that also works in Langley and Delta, that’s lost calls every week.
  • You already rank somewhere on Maps but a competitor sits above you, and the gap is profile completeness and on-site content rather than ad spend.
  • Your margins can’t absorb a cost per click in a competitive category.
  • You’re in it for the long term. Local SEO is cumulative — the work you do this quarter still counts next year, which is not true of a paused ad account.

We treat local SEO and Google Business Profile management as a core service, not an add-on tacked onto a social media retainer. We don’t promise positions or put a date on movement, because nobody honestly can. What we do is remove the reasons Google has to show someone else.

Running both together

Most established businesses end up here, and it isn’t a compromise. Ads cover the searches you can’t rank for yet and the ones with buying intent. SEO lowers your dependence on paid traffic over time. Ads data tells you which terms deserve a page; SEO performance tells you which terms you can stop paying for.

Because our services are flexible modules rather than fixed packages, this doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing split. A common shape is a tight Google Ads campaign on a short list of high-intent terms running alongside Google Business Profile and citation work.

The deciding factors

  • Is your website capable of turning a visit into a call? If not, neither channel fixes it. “We’re getting no calls from our website” is sometimes a traffic problem and sometimes a page problem.
  • How complete is your Google Business Profile? Categories, services, hours, service areas. Gaps here are the cheapest thing to fix.
  • Do you have a date you’re working towards? A seasonal peak argues for ads.
  • What’s a customer worth to you? High-value services tolerate click costs; low-margin ones often don’t.
  • How competitive is your category in your city? Vancouver, Burnaby and Richmond are not the same auction as White Rock or New Westminster.
  • Can you sustain spend month after month? If the budget is one-off, put it into assets you keep.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google Ads help my SEO?

Not directly — paid clicks don’t influence unpaid rankings. The indirect benefit is real, though. Ads show you which search phrases actually produce enquiries rather than just traffic, and that tells you which pages and services are worth building out organically. It’s research you’re paying for anyway.

What if my competitor outranks me on Google Maps?

That’s one of the most frequent reasons businesses contact us. We look at profile completeness, category selection, service area settings, citation consistency across directories, and the content on your site that supports those services. Sometimes the fix is straightforward housekeeping; sometimes it’s a longer piece of work.

Do I need to commit to both services at once?

No. We structure work as flexible modules rather than fixed packages, so you can start with Google Ads, start with local SEO, or add social media management later. Plenty of clients begin with one channel and expand once they can see what the reporting shows.

Do you only work with businesses in Surrey?

We’re based in Surrey and serve Metro Vancouver — Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam, Langley, Delta, White Rock and New Westminster. Most of our clients work with us online from across Canada and the United States. The work is done here in Surrey, not subcontracted offshore.
